DESCRIPTION

The NanoReg2 project, built around the challenge of coupling SbD (Safe by Design) to the regulatory process, aimed to demonstrate and establish new principles and ideas based on data from value chain implementation studies to establish SbD as a fundamental pillar in the validation of a novel MNM (manufactured nanomaterials). It is widely recognized by industries as well as by regulatory agencies that grouping strategies for nanomaterials are urgently needed. ECETOC has formed a task force on nanomaterials grouping and also within the OECD WPMN a group works on nanomaterials categorisation. However, so far no reliable and regulatory accepted grouping concepts could be established. Grouping concepts developed by NanoReg2 can be regarded as a major innovation therefore as guidance documents on nanomaterials grouping will not only support industries or regulatory agencies but would also strongly support commercial launch of a new nanomaterial.

The work on this project was based on the three pillars that support Safe by Design (safe design, safe production and safe use), which implies the use of safer nanomaterials, minimizing the risk during production and finally, produce safer products throughout their entire life cycle (both for the consumer and for the environment).

NANOGAP's role in this project has been to serve as a “Case Study” to verify the suitability of the concept of SbD within the nanomaterials industry. In this way NANOGAP participated as a pilot plant to test the effectiveness of process redesign in an industrial environment, as well as provide feedback on the processes involved in the production of nanomaterials and their application.

It is worth highlighting the great success of the NANOGAP “Case Study” within the project, that could be ended successfully and was an excellent demonstration of the SbD concept applied in a real industrial environment, beyond all theoretical discussion. This success also brought great benefit to the company, since, in addition to the great value of all the information generated, there was a significant improvement in the production of silver nanofibers, in addition to promoting the identification of critical points within the process of production, which led to adopting internal changes to reduce the occupational exposure of workers.
