Our Atomic Quantum Clusters have shown exceptional catalytic activity
NANOGAP Atomic Quantum Clusters have shown exceptional catalytic activity, representing a disruptive technology with order-of-magnitude improvements in efficiency.
With particle size comparable to the Fermi wavelength of an electron (e.g. ~0.52 nm for gold, silver or copper), AQCs exhibit dramatically different behavior from what would be expected from scaling laws owing to geometrical and electronic structures.
The catalytic activity of AQCs cannot be attributed to an increase of the surface area, but rather to the quantum effects that cause a splitting of energies at the Fermi level. AQCs display properties that are dramatically different from nanoparticles, properties that strongly depend on the cluster size.
There is potential to use AQCs in both homogeneous and heterogeneous applications.
Application areas that could benefit from this new technology include:
Selective oxidation of alcohols and alkenes
Homocoupling reactions
Photochemistry
Hydrogenation
Degradation reactions
Green chemistry
Fuel cells
Water remediation
Hydrogen production
NOx and CO oxidation
CO2 reduction
